What we do

St Gregory’s Foundation helps disabled children and teenagers with communication difficulties to connect to the world so they can become as independent as possible. We provide education, training and skills to graduates from orphanages to give them a good start in life. We empower children and families living with impaired hearing to take a full part in…

Where we work

St Gregory’s Foundation supports projects across Eastern Europe, and in particular in St Petersburg, Moscow and Karelia in North West Russia, in Călărași and Chișinău in Moldova and in Tbilisi in Georgia. Vova is learning to count out loud. He was born deaf but his parents decided to have him fitted with a cochlear implant. St Gregory's is proud to sponsor a club for deaf toddlers in St Petersburg where all children are helped to communicate in the best way for them. Whether they use signs or words, these children are connecting and developing their relationships and their skills.

Without home visits from our colleagues at Sunflower, Polina and her daughter could easily slip through the net. Polina is doing a great job at keeping her daughter fed, clothed and healthy. But having left home at 13 and grown up in care and with her older sister, Polina is struggling with the more emotional side of parenting. Her anxiety has stopped her joining the parenting support group that Sunflower runs for parents who grew up in care. She finds it difficult to ask for help too. Sunflower are helping her understand her daughter better, and get the support she needs for both of them from a local nursery. NB because of the vulnerability of the family, names and appearance have been changed. https://buff.ly/YwvhzMA

September saw Sunflower gathering a new group of teenagers who will be supported as they prepare to leave their children's home and start independent life. Each one of these young people says they feel lonely, each one is uncertain about who they are and what their future holds for them. Already the group have grown in confidence and trust. In this session about emotions, the group are beginning to open up and talk about their emotions - a new experience for them. Sunflower will build on these promising beginnings in the coming months. Their work is shown to reduce mental health problems and reduce the risk of these young people being exploited or behaving in self-destructive ways in future.
